A model of the Bristol Aerospace Black Brant sounding rocket.

In the 1950s/60s Canada developed a sounding rocket program to carry scientific payloads within the upper atmosphere which led to the Bristol Aerospace Black Brant rocket series. The Black Brant III design started in 1958, to provide a scaled down version of the Black Brant II. Initial launches were originally planned from Churchill Research Range (Fort Churchill) in northern Manitoba, but the facility was severely damaged by fire in 1961, leading to relocation to a launch pad at the American Wallops Island rocket range, off the Virginia coast. The first launch occurred there on June 15, 1962, with the rocket carrying a payload of 42kg, reaching 1700 m/sec to a range of 98km.
