The "Impossible Dragon" by dreggory was the exact kind of tensegrity figure I searched for, but I wanted to print it without support where possible to get the best possible finish. Therefore I cut it in FDM friendly pieces which need only minor cleanup.

See 3mf files with Prusa Slicer for print setting details and used modifiers! If you have a Prusa i3 MK2 printer, you might be able to use them even without modification.

I printed it at 150% scale and used CA glue to assemble the dragon. For connecting the thread to the parts, I recommend this order using a tiny drop of CA glue:

  • Cut 4 pieces of thread, longer than needed at first.

  • Glue the 3 outer ones into the hole of the base.

  • Glue the middle one into the hole in the tail of the dragon, not the base!

  • Start positioning the dragon above the base by estimating the length of the outer 3 threads, use pieces of tape to hold the yarn in place at this step!

  • Thread the middle yarn of his tail to the hole in the rock and lightly pull on it to make him "fly" and check the 3 outer yarn lengths. Adjust if needed.

  • Fix the 3 outer yarns to the dragon with a drop of CA glue, wait until dry then cut the excess length and remove the tape.

  • Lightly pull on the 4th middle yarn for final check and lock the yarn in possition with tape.

  • Apply a small drop of CA to the yarn in the rock, wait until dry, cut excess yarn.

  • Enjoy!
