This is a model of the Sputnik 1, worlds first satellite launched by the Soviet Union on the 4th of October 1957. It was nothing more than a metal ball with for radio antennas that broadcasted radio signals back to earth that gave information about the ionosphere. The satellite was simple, but is commonly thought of as the satellite that set of the space race.
